Pelosi: Attack on Husband Will Affect Retirement Decision

November 8, 2022

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Monday on CNN that the brutal attack on her husband would factor into her decision about when to retire from Congress.

Appearing in her first televised interview since the October 28 incident, Pelosi said, “For me, the really hard part” was knowing that she was the intruder’s intended victim. “Because Paul was not the target, and he is the one who is paying the price.”

Police say 42-year-old David DePape broke into the Pelosis’ California home while the Speaker was in Washington and bludgeoned 82-year-old Paul Pelosi’s skull with a hammer. Prosecutors say DePape intended to kidnap the Speaker, interrogate her and break her kneecaps if she “lied” to him.

On Monday night, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked Speaker Pelosi whether she had made up her mind about retiring from Congress if the Democrats lose the House majority in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Pelosi hedged, but added, “I have to say, my decision will be affected by what happened the last week or two.”
