Four of the five Supreme Court Justices who ruled to overturn Roe v Wade and the Constitutional right to abortion attended the black tie dinner Thursday for the conservative Federalist Society’s 40th Anniversary.
Justice Samuel Alito reportedly received a long, loud ovation from the crowd of roughly 2,000 when a speaker praised the opinion he wrote for Dobbs v Jackson which overturned Roe on June 24.
Both Alito and Justice Amy Coney Barrett made brief remarks at the dinner in the main hall at Washington DC’s Union Station. Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh attended as well.
Barrett, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh were all Trump appointees, whom he chose from a list of judges given to him by a group of attorneys who received input from the Federalist Society.
In Tuesday’s midterm elections, all five states with abortion ballot initiatives—California, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont—won in favor of abortion rights.
