House GOP Files Articles Of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Mayorkas

January 10, 2023

Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) filed articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas late Monday.

Making good on a vow by House Republicans to hold investigations against Mayorkas, among other federal officials like the FBI Director Chris Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, Fallon had actually filed the paperwork initially on January 3 but because of delays in securing a House Speaker it didn’t go through officially until Monday.

Back in November, now-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had called on Mayorkas to step down over record-high U.S.-Mexico border migrant crossings, threatening him with impeachment if he did not do otherwise when Republicans took majority in the House.

Fallon’s resolution claims that Mayorkas has “engaged in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with his duties,” and that he has failed to maintain operational control over the border.

The resolution comes after President Biden visited the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time during his Administration on Sunday. He is currently in Mexico meeting with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a Summit of the Americas.

Mayorkas traveled with Biden to Mexico. He is set to discuss coordination on trans-national crime with Mexican authorities.

Mayorkas’ office did not immediately respond to reporters’ request for comment on the impeachment resolution.
