Adam Schiff Announces Run for Senate

January 26, 2023

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced Thursday that he is running for Senate in what will likely be a highly competitive race in California.

“We’re in the fight of our lives for the future of our country,” Schiff said in a statement. “Our democracy is under assault from MAGA extremists, who care only about gaining power and keeping it. And our economy is simply not working for millions of Americans, who are working harder than ever just to get by.”

Schiff enters a race already occupied by California Democratic Rep. Katie Porter, who announced on January 10 that she’s running for Senate in 2024. Rep. Barbara Lee has also reportedly told members of the Congressional Black Caucus that she plans to run for Senate, but has not yet made a formal announcement.

The trio are expected to be on a list of California Democratic contenders that could also include Reps. Eric Swalwell and Ro Khanna, as it’s expected that 89-year-old Dianne Feinstein will announce her retirement at some point, rather than run for a seventh term.

So far, however, Feinstein has remained silent about her future plans.

Schiff’s announcement comes as he, along with Swalwell, has been targeted by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who announced he was booting the pair off the House Select Committee on Intelligence, which Schiff Chaired in the 117th Congress and oversaw the first impeachment of then-President Trump.

Schiff also served as a member of the Select Committee that investigated the January 6 insurrection.
