FBI Searched Biden’s Alma Mater for Classified Documents

February 16, 2023

The FBI has conducted two searches of President Biden’s alma mater, the University of Delaware, in its investigation into mishandled classified documents, according to reports.

The university’s library is home to a sizable collection of papers from Biden’s years in the Senate. However, the more than 1,850 boxes of records have not been open to the public since the university obtained the collection in 2012.

According to reports, the university searches were conducted in recent weeks with the consent and cooperation of Biden’s legal team. Investigators retrieved materials from two university locations on two separate days. The material did not appear to have classified markings, but it’s now being reviewed by the FBI, a source told CNN.

The university search follows discoveries of classified materials at President Biden’s private office and residence. Biden voluntarily agreed to an FBI search of his home in Wilmington, Delaware, which uncovered six items in addition to the materials previously found at the residence and his private office. A search earlier this month of Biden’s vacation house in Rehoboth Beach turned up no additional documents marked classified.

On Friday, former Vice President Pence revealed that a search that day of his Carmel, Indiana home had uncovered one additional document marked classified, roughly two and a half weeks after a lawyer for Pence discovered about a dozen documents marked classified at his home.

Also on Friday, it was revealed that former President Trump’s legal team recently turned over to the DOJ an additional folder with classified markings that the lawyers said they found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

There have so far been no public reports of the FBI searching former President Trump’s additional properties—including Manhattan and Bedminster, New Jersey—beyond Mar-a-Lago after an August FBI search of his Florida country club residence uncovered hundreds of documents marked classified.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed special counsels—Jack Smith and Robert Hur—to investigate the Trump and Biden classified documents cases, respectively.
