Mitch McConnell Hospitalized After Fall

March 9, 2023

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was hospitalized Wednesday evening after tripping and falling at a hotel in Washington.

McConnell had been attending a private dinner when he suffered the spill, according to his spokesperson Doug Andres.

The office of the 81-year-old Senator did not provide additional details on his condition or how long he may be absent from Congress.

McConnell is the latest of a handful of U.S. Senators who’ve been hospitalized for various reasons.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) was released from the hospital Tuesday as the 89-year-old recovers from a bout of shingles. She had been admitted March 2.

She tweeted Tuesday that she’s “recovering at home” and she looks forward to returning to the Senate “as soon as possible.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) remains in the hospital after checking himself in to treat clinical depression in mid-February.

On Tuesday, Fetterman’s chief of staff Adam Jentleson tweeted several photos of Fetterman, saying the Senator is “well on his way to recovery” and he “will be back soon.”

The absence of the two Democrats from the Senate had impacted the balance of power in the chamber, leading Vice President Kamala Harris to have to break several 49-49 ties.

With McConnell hospitalized, the balance in the Senate generally shifts back to favor Democrats for the time being.
