Bipartisan-Supported, Trump-Appointed Judge to Oversee Hunter Biden Case

June 21, 2023

How likely is it that Hunter Biden will receive special treatment in the criminal case against him?

Federal District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who was appointed by then-President Trump and received bipartisan backing in the Senate, will oversee the criminal case of President Biden’s son, Hunter.

Noreika, a former patent attorney, was appointed to the U.S. District Court of Delaware in August 2018 after she was confirmed in the Senate by voice vote.

On Tuesday Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors for failure to pay taxes in a timely manner in 2017 and 2018, and he struck a deal with a Trump-appointed federal prosecutor for felony gun possession. He’d lied on his gun application about his struggles with drug addiction.

Federal records indicate that Noreika has donated more than $15,000 to political candidates dating back to 1999, and that her political spending has gone to both parties. For example, she gave $1,000 to Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign during the Democratic primaries, then later that same year donated $2,300 to John McCain’s Republican campaign for President.

She has also in the past supported current and former Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

Further, Noreika donated $1,000 in 2009 to the DSCC—the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
