DeSantis Shakes Up Campaign Staff

July 17, 2023

Presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) cut nearly a dozen campaign staff members over the weekend, according to reports.

Before the shake-up, he had roughly 90 staffers on the books.

The firings come as DeSantis has struggled to meet fundraising expectations.

The governor did raise about $20 million in the 2nd quarter of 2023—second highest among 13 GOP candidates and exceeded only by former President Trump.

However, the DeSantis campaign has been rapidly burning through cash, spending nearly $8 million since he tossed his hat the race in May.

Meanwhile, President Biden and the DNC raised a combined $72 million in the 2nd quarter. Those entities together had a combined $77 million in cash on hand as of June 30 when the 2nd quarter ended.

“Defeating Joe Biden and the $72 million behind him will require a nimble and candidate driven campaign, and we are building a movement to go the distance,” campaign spokesperson Andrew Romeo said in a statement.

DeSantis entered the 3rd quarter this month with $12.2 million in cash on hand, about $9 million of which is available for spending in the GOP primary with another $3 million earmarked for the general election.
