Fani Willis seeks October 23 trial date in Georgia election case

August 24, 2023

How likely is it that the trial on 2020 election interference in Georgia will begin on October 23, 2023?

Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis on Thursday asked a Superior Court judge for an October 23 trial date in her investigation into 2020 election interference in Georgia.

Last week, a Georgia grand jury indicted 19 co-defendants, including former President Trump, related to Willis’ investigation. She has given each of the co-defendants—whom she plans to try at the same time on state racketeering charges—until this Friday to “voluntarily surrender” or face an arrest warrant.

One of those co-defendants, attorney Kenneth Chesebro, on Wednesday filed a motion demanding a speedy trial in the case.

In her court filing Thursday Willis directly cited Chesebro’s request.

“Without waiving any objection as to the sufficiency of Defendant Kenneth John Chesebro’s filing, the State requests that this Court specially set the trial in this case to commence on October 23, 2023, which falls within the term of the ‘next succeeding regular court term’ after the July-August, 2023 term of the Superior Court of Fulton County, Atlanta Judicial Circuit,” Willis wrote.

Soon after Willis’ filing, Trump attorneys swiftly filed to oppose the October start date.

Her request came the same day that Trump was set to turn himself in at the Fulton County Jail, after his attorneys on Monday signed on to a $200,000 bond agreement related to the 13 charges against the former President in Georgia.

According to reports, the former President’s surrender to authorities was set to occur Thursday evening.
