The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said Monday that there were “not enough body bags for the dead in Gaza.”
According to the U.N. organization, more than 1 million people, or almost half the total population of Gaza, have been displaced amid the Israel-Hamas war, now in its second week.
Health officials in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said Monday they had begun storing bodies of those killed in air strikes in ice cream freezer trucks because moving them to hospitals was too risky, and cemeteries had grown short on space.
Israel unleashed a bombing campaign on Gaza after the terrorist organization Hamas killed more than 1,300 Israelis. And as of Monday, Israel Defense Forces have notified 199 families that their loved ones are being held hostage in the Gaza Strip, according to an IDF spokesperson. Meanwhile, at least 2,670 have been killed in Gaza.
The majority of casualties on both sides of the war have been civilians.
Last week, the IDF dropped leaflets on Gaza, ordering residents to flee within 24 hours, ahead of an expected ground operation in the territory. About 1.1 million people live in the Northern area of Gaza. Many have fled by car or truck as well as on foot.
Many Palestinians have been gathering at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt in southern Gaza. However, the crossing, which was closed this past Tuesday, remained closed as of Monday morning, though Egyptian officials suggested over the weekend that they may soon reopen it.
For days U.S. officials have been engaged in discussions to secure a humanitarian corridor that would allow civilians—including Americans still in the region—to safely leave Gaza.
“We support safe passage for civilians,” said a State Department spokesperson. “We are working with our Israeli and Egyptian partners to establish a safe humanitarian corridor both for Gazans trying to flee this war and to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those in need within the territory”
