U.S. Capitol Police said Tuesday they had arrested a man with a gun “in the park across from Union Station” near the Senate.
Capitol Police declared the scene “clear” after taking the suspect into custody.
“We just searched the area in the park that we secured,” Capitol Police posted on social media. “Out of an abundance of caution, we going to search the suspect’s belongings. Again, the suspect is in custody. Investigation ongoing.”
One police officer stated that the had been carrying “an AR-15.” (
A video of the man’s apprehension quickly surfaced on social media, showing police escorting him away from an area near the Capitol Building that was marked off with police tape.
Several photos showed the suspect, wearing a tan sweatsuit, in police custody.
The incident was the second arrest involving firearms near Capitol Hill in three days. On Sunday, two men were arrested after they crashed a stolen car into a barricade near the Capitol. They were in possession of two handguns, including one that was modified to be turned into a machine gun.
