3 General Election Presidential Debates scheduled for 2024

November 21, 2023

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday that three general election debates have been scheduled for September 16 through October 9 ahead of voting in 2024.

The first debate is scheduled for September 16 at Texas University in San Marcos.

The second debate is set for October 1 at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

The third debate is planned for October 9 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

One Vice Presidential debate is also scheduled, for September 25 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

So far, nether the Democratic Party nor the Republican Party has committed to having their candidate attend any of the debates.

Former President Trump, who currently holds 44.5% lead over other GOP candidates according to Real Clear Politics’ polling average, has so far not participated in any of the Republican National Committee’s primary debates.

The RNC has made it a stipulation for participating in its primary debates that candidates sign a pledge promising to support whoever is the party’s candidate in 2024.

Currently, the RNC is also considering potential rules changes that would have the party’s Presidential candidate also sign a pledge saying they won’t participate in any of the debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Trump has insisted that he wants to debate President Biden if he’s the Republican nominee.

“We have to debate,” he told Fox News in June. “He and I have to definitely debate. That’s what I love. The two of us have to debate.”

The non-partisan, non-profit Commission on Presidential Debates was established in 1987 and has sponsored every general election Presidential and Vice Presidential debate since. It receives neither federal funding nor financial support from any political party or campaign.
