Lawyers for WNBA star Brittney Griner said she’s been transferred to a penal colony to serve her sentence for drug possession, after a Russian court last month rejected an appeal of her nine-year sentence.
The 32-year-old was convicted in August of possessing vape canisters that contained 0.702 grams of cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport.
The Biden Administration has offered to exchange an imprisoned Russian arms dealer for the release of Griner and another American, 52-year-old Paul Whelan.
“Every minute that Brittney Griner must endure wrongful detention in Russia is a minute too long,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “As we have said before, the U.S. Government made a significant offer to the Russians to resolve the current unacceptable and wrongful detentions of American citizens.”
