Researchers at the University of Houston have developed a vaccine that they say could block the effects of fentanyl and prevent addiction.
The experimental vaccine is being called a potential “game changer.” It generates anti-fentanyl antibodies that block the ability of the opioid to enter the brain, cutting off the drug’s “high.”
The vaccine was successful in both male and female test subjects, although researchers noted a “greater impact” among males.
Researchers say the data supports further clinical development of the vaccine.
According to the CDC more than 150 people die every day from overdoses connected to synthetic opioids.
