The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it has fixed a “computer issue” that caused flight delays at major airports in Florida on Monday.
The FAA said in a statement, “The computer issue has been resolved. The FAA is working toward safely returning to a normal traffic rate in the Florida airspace.”
On Monday the FAA issued a so-called ground-stop order due to a problem with a system known as the En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM), which is used to control air traffic. Flight traffic into Florida was slowed as a consequence.
It was the ERAM system at a major regional air traffic control center in Miami that caused dozens of flight delays at the Miami International Airport and also flights into other Florida airports.
The malfunctioning ERAM was the latest headache for American travelers following last week’s massive winter storm ground Southwest Airlines’ thousands of flights to a standstill, leaving planes and crews scattered, hundreds of thousands of passengers in limbo and scores of unclaimed luggage at baggage claims throughout the U.S.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has vowed to hold Southwest accountable for making its terribly inconvenienced customers whole.
