Sen. Bob Casey Jr. Announces He Has Cancer

January 5, 2023

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA) said Thursday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“Last month, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While this news came as a shock, I can report that I have an excellent prognosis, as well as the benefit of exceptional medical care and the unwavering support of my family,” the Senator said in a statement. “In the coming months I will undergo surgery, after which I am expected to make a full recovery. I am confident that my recommended course of treatment will allow me to continue my service in the 118th Congress with minimal disruption, and I look forward to the work ahead.”

Casey has been a member of the U.S Senate since 2007. Following the 2018 midterm elections, he became the first Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania to win three terms and the first person to win six statewide elections in Pennsylvania.

His father, Robert P. Casey Sr., served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1995.

Sen. Casey is the second Congressional lawmaker in just over a week to announce he’s battling cancer. On December 28 Rep.-elect Jamie Raskin (D-MD) announced he’s undergoing treatment for Lymphoma.
