Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) announced on Tuesday that she’s running for Senate in 2024.
“California needs a warrior in the Senate—to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,” Porter tweeted. “Today, I’m proud to announce my candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2024.”
The California Congresswoman announced her decision to run for Senate even as the state’s 89-year-old Senator, Dianne Feinstein (D), remains silent about her future plans.
Porter—a former student of former Harvard law professor Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)—pursued and taught bankruptcy law before entering politics. She became a favorite of liberals on social media for her white board lectures amid House hearings, during which she would call to account corporate execs when their testimony didn’t meet the math, like ripping then-Wells Fargo CEO Timothy Sloan about the bank’s ongoing fraud scandals.
An image of Porter over the weekend went viral during the nearly-historic four-day-long battle to elect a Speaker when, amid Republican infighting that at least once grew physical, she was captured reading a book entitled, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k.”
Porter’s run for Senate would open up California’s 47th Congressional district in the western portion of the state’s traditionally Republican-leaning Orange County as Republicans hold a mere five-seat majority over Democrats in the House. Democrats are likely hoping to regain their House majority in ’24.
