Social Media site Twitter has temporarily restricted the Congressional account of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) after she tweeted a graphic that referred to a “Trans Day of Vengeance” following this week’s mass shooting at a school in Nashville.
Greene posted a screenshot of Twitter’s notice on her personal account on Tuesday. It said that some of her Congressional account’s features were being temporarily suspended for violating Twitter’s rules.
“This planned event is being whitewashed by global brands and the left,” the Congresswoman had further tweeted.
The Trans Radical Activist Network, Our Rights DC, and other groups have been putting together an event to protest anti-trans legislation and violence that transgender people in the U.S. continue to face.
Set to take place in front of the Supreme Court, the groups say the event “is about unity, not inciting violence,” stressing that violence is neither encouraged nor welcomed at the event.
The mass shooter at The Covenant School in Nashville, who killed three 9-year-olds and three adults before being killed in a shootout with police on Monday, identified as a transgender woman. When asked Monday whether her gender identity entered into her motive, Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake replied that there was “some theory to that,” but that authorities were “investigating all the leads.”
On Tuesday, Drake added that the shooter was under a doctor’s care for a mental health disorder.
The groups organizing the demonstration at the Supreme Court have said they are “horrified” and “outraged” by the mass shooting, and they reject “any connection” between that and their protest.
“Vengeance means fighting back with vehemence. We are fighting against false narratives, criminalization, and eradication of our existence,” the groups said in a joint statement. “It is also a call to our allies to stand up and fight with us to bring down the forces that try to divide and subjugate us all.”
Meanwhile, Twitter’s trust and safety head, Ella Irwin, said the website had to “sweep” Twitter to remove more than 5,000 tweets and retweets of the graphic that got Rep. Greene’s account restricted for seven days.
“We do not support tweets that incite violence irrespective of who posts them. ‘Vengeance’ does not imply peaceful protest. Organizing or support for peaceful protests is ok,” Irwin tweeted.
