Former FBI Agent Faces January 6 Related Charges

May 3, 2023

Jared Wise, a former FBI supervisory special agent, has been charged for his alleged actions during the deadly January 6, 2021 insurrection upon the U.S. Capitol.

The 50-year-old Oregon man appears on video apparently entering the Capitol with the first wave of rioters at around 2:23pm on January 6. The video shows him entering through a Senate wing door and exiting out a window next to the door about ten minutes later.

According to court documents, after Wise left the building he called police officers—his former colleagues in law enforcement—Nazis, telling them, “You are the Gestapo,” and yelled, “Yeah, kill ’em!”

An FBI affadavit says the agency’s initial tip about Wise came from someone whom he told about entering the building.

Wise was an FBI supervisory agent from 2004 to 2017. It wasn’t immediately clear where Wise was employed at the time of the riot that broke out in an attempt to block Congress from certifying President Biden’s 2020 election victory over then-President Trump.

He has not made a plea yet, after being charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building; disorderly conduct in a restricted building; disorderly conduct with an intent to impede an orderly session of Congress; and unlawfully parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

Wise made his initial court appearance Monday in U.S. District Court in Oregon and was released pending trial. His case is being moved to federal court in DC where he has an appearance scheduled May 9.

At least 20 current and former law enforcement officers, including Wise, are among the more than 1,000 people who’ve been criminally charged following the assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Four people died during the insurrection, and five police officers died of various causes following the attack.
