Cop Charged with Obstruction in Former Proud Boys Chair Tarrio’s Case

May 19, 2023

A DC Police Lieutenant was charged Friday with obstruction of justice for leaking sensitive information to former Proud Boys chair Henry “Enrique” Tarrio.

The information was leaked to Tarrio ahead of his arrest on January 4, 2021 for burning a Black Lives Matter banner at a historic African-American church.

Tarrio pleaded guilty to one count of destruction of property related to the crime. It was cited in ordering him not to enter Washington DC on January 6, 2021, though despite his remaining in Baltimore that day he’s been convicted of seditious conspiracy, along with four other former Proud Boys, for his role in the deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol and attempt to overturn the 2020 Presidential election.

On Friday, Lt. Shane Lamond was indicted on one count of obstruction of justice and three counts of making false statements.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Lamond was in regular contact with Tarrio between July 2019 and January 2021. Starting as early as July 2020, authorities say he provided the now-convicted insurrectionist with information about law enforcement activity related to the Proud Boys, a right-wing extremist organization.

After the burning of the BLM banner in December 2020, authorities say Lamond passed confidential information to Tarrio about the criminal investigation. Early the next month, they say Lamond notified Tarrio that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Federal prosecutors further allege that Lamond made false and misleading statements during an interview with authorities in June 2021 about his contact with Tarrio, including their discussions ahead of January 6.

For his conviction of seditious conspiracy, Tarrio and the other former Proud Boys each face up to 20 years in prison related to that crime alone.
