Former Vice President Pence filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, according to the FEC’s website.
Though he has not made a formal announcement yet, 63-year-old Pence is joining a large and growing group of GOP condenders looking to unseat President Biden, including Pence’s ex-boss, former President Trump, who announced he’s running for reelection back in November.
Other Republicans who’ve already tossed in their hats include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to formally announce on Tuesday, while North Carolina Gov. Doug Burgrum is expected to do so on Wednesday.
Including several business people and media personalities from outside the traditional political realm, at least 11 Republicans will have joined the GOP nomination race this week.
“In 2024, I believe Conservatives have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to renew the promise of America!” Pence tweeted Saturday while attending the “Roast and Ride” motorcycle event in the first-in-the-nation GOP Caucus state of Iowa, along with several other GOP Presidential hopefuls, hosted by that state’s Sen. Joni Ernst (R).
A CNN poll from May 24 found Pence trailing far behind Trump’s comfortable lead of 53% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Pence garnered just 6% of support from those voters in the same poll.
