Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office as recently as May, according to state officials.
The subpoenas had not been publicly known. On Wednesday a spokesperson for Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes confirmed that the outside legal firm which represents the office complied with the subpoenas.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in November appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate any potential criminal wrongdoing by Trump regarding the 2020 election and the related January 6, 2021 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.
The Arizona subpoenas sought information related to two lawsuits, one from the Trump campaign and another from then-Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman Kelli Ward. The suits alleged errors and fraud in the 2020 presidential results.
Over the weekend it was reported that, like Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger who was interviewed recently by the special counsel’s office, then-President Trump in 2020 attempted to pressure Arizona’s then-Gov. Doug Ducey (R) into overturning his election loss in that state.
Ducey confirmed in December 2020 that it was indeed Trump who was attempting to call him while he certified Arizona’s election victory for then-President-elect Biden in 2020. In a video that went viral, Ducey ignored the November 30 call, placing his cell phone face down on the desk while his ringtone played “Hail to the Chief.”
However, despite issuing subpoenas to Arizona’s Secretary of State, the special counsel reportedly has so far not reached out to Ducey.
Biden defeated Trump by 10,457 votes in Arizona—the narrowest margin in the United States during the 2020 Presidential election.
Smith’s office also spoke with Arizona’s leading state legislators, House Speaker Ben Toma and Senate President Warren Petersen, both Republicans, in February.
