The United States has surpassed 400 mass shootings so far in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive, setting the stage for a record-breaking year.
The Gun Violence archive defines a mass shooting as four or more people killed or injured by gunfire in a single incident.
The 400th shooting took place in Houston, where five people, all 18-year-old men were injured, though the alleged 18-year-old gunman remained unharmed.
That shooting was reportedly sparked by a fight in the parking lot of an after-hours nightclub around 4:30am CT Sunday. The alleged gunman followed the others into the club and opened fire, according to police.
Authorities were still looking for the gunman on Sunday.
Since that Houston shooting there have been at least three more mass shootings in the U.S., in Birmingham, Tampa and Dallas, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
With five months still remaining in 2023, the nation has already surpassed the number of mass shootings from 2013, when the Gun Violence Archive began tracking figures, through 2018. At its current pace, 2023 is on track to experience more mass shootings than in the years 2019 through 2022, as well.
Fifty of the 400 mass shootings in the U.S. occurred in the three weeks between the July 4th holiday and this weekend.
Nearly one-fifth of all U.S. adults has had a family member killed by gunfire, according to a survey 2023 by KFF, formerly known as the Kaiser Family Foundation. Roughly that same number has been threatened with a gun, while another one in six adults has witnessed an injury from a shooting.
