Organizers have submitted enough valid signatures to put an amendment on the November ballot that would enshrine abortion rights in Ohio’s state constitution, state Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced Tuesday.
The amendment to be voted on by Ohioans would ensure “every individual has a right to make and carry out one’s reproductive decision.”
Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in June 2022 erasing the U.S. Constitutional right to abortion, Ohio became one of several states that have passed six-week abortion bans. However, the Ohio ban is currently being held up in the courts as it faces legal challenges.
Some 414,000 signatures had been required to get the amendment proposal placed on Ohio’s ballot this fall.
Similar abortion rights ballot measures have passed in Kentucky and Michigan, both of which border Ohio, since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe.
