Six migrant workers were hit by an SUV Sunday in Lincolnton, North Carolina, in what police are investigating as a possible intentional vehicular assault.
Around 1:17pm ET, an unidentified driver of an older-model mid-sized black SUV drove into the group of migrant workers, according to Lincolnton PD.
While police said the “motives of the suspect are still under investigation,” they added that it appeared to be an “intentional assault” near a Walmart in Lincolnton, about 38 miles northwest of Charlotte.
Authorities are looking for the public’s help in identifying both the driver and the vehicle, which has a luggage rack on its roof. Police described the driver as an “older white male.”
Sunday’s incident follows a similar incident in May in Brownsville, Texas. Police in that city said 34-year-old George Alvarez had been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly slamming into a crowd, killing eight people and injuring at least 10 others who were waiting for a bus outside a migrant shelter on the U.S.-Mexico border.
