Former President Trump was expected to shake up his legal team as soon as Thursday—the same day he was set to turn himself in at Fulton County Jail in Georgia, according to ABC News.
Sources told ABC that attorney Drew Findling would depart Trump’s legal team and be replaced by a well-known Georgia attorney Steven Sadow, who confirmed his having been hired.
“I have been retained to represent President Trump in the Fulton County, Georgia, case,” said Sadow. “The President should never have been indicted. He is innocent of all the charges brought against him. We look forward to the case being dismissed or, if necessary, an unbiased, open minded jury finding the President not guilty.”
Findling had been leading the former President’s legal team related to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ more-than-two-year investigation into election interference in Georgia’s 2020 election.
Trump is among 19 co-defendants who were indicted by a grand jury last week related to attempts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has given each of the co-defendants until Friday to “voluntarily surrender” or face an arrest warrant.
Along with other various charges, each of the co-defendants was charged with racketeering. Georgia’s RICO statute is much stricter than the federal statute, and a suspect could face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each racketeering count.
Trump is also facing, among 13 criminal counts in Georgia, solicitation of violation of oath by public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree, conspiracy to commit false statements and writings, conspiracy to commit filing false documents, and conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree.
Another Trump attorney, Jennifer Little, is expected to remain on Trump’s legal team with Sadow.
On Monday Findling and Little, as well as Trump attorney Marissa Goldberg, signed a $200,000 bond agreement with Willis related to the charges against Trump in Georgia. That evening the former President posted on social media that he would be turning himself in at the Fulton County jail on Thursday.
According to reports, the former President’s surrender to authorities was set to occur Thursday evening.
