Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced Friday she would be running for reelection in November 2024.
Pelosi wrote on social media, “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery. Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection—and respectfully ask for your vote.”
In November 2022 Pelosi, now 83 years old, stepped back from House leadership, adding that she would continue as a member of the House “to speak for the people of San Francisco.”
That decision was announced just weeks after her husband, businessman Paul Pelosi, was attacked by an assailant with a hammer and suffered a fractured skull in the couple’s California home.
Her decision to step away from leadership also came in the days following the 2022 midterm elections, in which Republicans gained a five-seat House majority, and the Speakership would ultimately go to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in the 118th Congress.
Pelosi has in recent days rebuffed criticisms of an aging Congress, this week pushing back on calls for 90-year-old Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who suffered health issues this year, to resign.
She brushed off remarks about Feinstein as “a guy thing,” but she has not commented specifically on reports of health concerns 81-year-old Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who vowed this week to finish his term as Senate Minority Leader or polls showing Democratic voters have concerns about 80-year-old President Biden’s age as he seeks reelection in 2024, as well.
