Georgia lawmaker who demanded Fani Willis investigation suspended

September 29, 2023

Georgia state Sen. Colton Moore (R) who demanded a special session to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) was suspended indefinitely from the chamber’s GOP caucus Thursday.

“Despite the fact 32 of 33 Republican State Senators, the Governor, Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, and the Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party agree that a Special Session to take action against the Fulton County District Attorney is impossible, Senator Moore has a right to his opinion,” Georgia state Senate Republicans wrote in a statement posted on social media.

However, the statement goes on to say that amid his “advocacy for his ill-conceived proposal” to investigate Willis, Moore “knowingly misled people across Georgia and our nation, causing unnecessary tension and hostility, while putting his Caucus colleagues and their families at risk of personal harm.”

Georgia Senate Republicans further note that Moore was informed that he had “violated multiple Caucus Rules on multiple occasions and was given every opportunity to simply adhere to the Rules going forward, not to abandon his wrongheaded policy position. Unfortunately, he has refused…”

Moore called for a special session for an investigation into Willis last month after a grand jury indicted former President Trump and 18 other co-defendants on racketeering and other charges last month related to attempts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election. The indictment came following a more than two-year investigation by Willis.

Moore hit back on his suspension, referring to his fellow Republicans in the state Senate as a “RINO caucus,” meaning Republican In Name Only.

A trial date for Trump and 16 other co-defendants has yet to be announced, though Willis has requested March 4, 2024.

The two other co-defendants who requested speedy trials—Kenneth Chesebro and Sydney Powell—are scheduled to be tried together on October 23.
