On the first day of the 2023-2024 Supreme Court term, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on Monday was set to unveil a new stamp honoring late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The ceremonial unveiling was scheduled to take place at 6pm ET at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
The USPS had announced last year that it would feature an oil painting of Justice Ginsburg on a “Forever” stamp, the current price of which is 66 cents.
Ginsburg, who’d been a champion of women’s rights and liberal causes, died in 2020 at the age of 87 due to complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer. She was a President Clinton appointee who served as a Supreme Court Justice for 27 years. Ginsburg was the Court’s second female member, after Reagan appointee Sandra Day O’Connor.
As an attorney who advocated for women’s rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg won five of the six cases she argued before the Supreme Court. After she became a judge, Clinton appointed her to the Supreme Court in 1993.
Known as “Notorious RBG” by her followers and supporters, in her last years on the Supreme Court she led scores of dissents against rulings amid an increasingly conservative bench.
She was replaced on the Court by conservative Trump appointee, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was among the Justices in June 2022 who ruled to overturn Roe v Wade, erasing 50 years of the Constitutional right to abortion.
Ginsburg is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, just outside Washington DC.
