Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked by three armed attackers about a mile from the U.S. Capitol, his office said Monday night.
In a statement, Cuellar’s chief of staff Jacob Hochberg said, “As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement.”
The incident reportedly occurred in Washington DC’s Navy Yard area. Metropolitan Police said it received a call about a carjacking around 9:30pm ET.
MPD said it was looking for three male suspects wearing all black.
The carjacking is the second reported assault on a member of Congress this year. In February, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was attacked in her DC apartment building.
In June, Khalil Hamlin pleaded guilty in that case to charges of assaulting a member of Congress and assaulting law enforcement officers as they attempted to arrest him on the day of Craig’s attack.
Craig’s chief of staff Nick Coe said at the time that the assault did not appear to be politically motivated, and so far there’s no reported indication of politics behind Cuellar’s carjacking, either.
