More than a dozen reporters “have lost their lives in Gaza in just 10 days,” the Committee to Protect Journalists reported on Wednesday.

Among those killed, according to the CPJ, was Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah, who lost his life during a shelling in southern Lebanon at the direction of Israel. Six other journalists were injured in that strike, including two other Reuters journalists, Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, two Al-Jazeera TV staffers Elie Brakhya and reporter Carmen Joukhadar, and AFP journalists Christina Assi and Dylan Collins.

“Journalists are making great sacrifices across the region to cover this important conflict,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, in Washington DC. “All parties should recognize that they are civilians and take measures to ensure their safety.”

As of Wednesday, CPJ had documented 17 journalists confirmed dead—13 Palestinian, three Israeli, and one Lebanese; eight journalists reported injured and three journalists reported missing or detained in the 11 days since Hamas massive surprise attack on Israel on October 7 sparked the Israeli-Hamas war.

Those numbers could potentially go higher as CPJ is investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, hurt or threatened, as well as reports of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes.
