Trump Legal Team Meets with Special Counsel, Told to Expect Indictment: Report

July 27, 2023

Lawyers for former President Trump were told to expect an indictment during meeting Thursday with prosecutors in the office of with Special Counsel Jack Smith, NBC News reported Thursday.

Trump attorneys Todd Blanche and John Lauro have reportedly wrapped a meeting with prosecutors as the grand jury investigating 2020 election interference was meeting in DC.

Reporter Garrett Haake said on MSNBC late Thursday morning, “It is our understanding that these lawyers have been told to expect an indictment against former President Trump related to the elections investigation possibly as soon as today.”

On his Truth Social media site Thursday afternoon, Trump posted, “No indication of notice was given during the meeting,” calling any reports that say as much, “Fake News.”

The grand jury had been scheduled to convene Tuesday, but reportedly skipped meeting that day. However, the jurors were indeed assembled at the Federal Courthouse in DC as scheduled on Thursday.

The meeting between Trump’s attorneys and Smith’s office comes after the former President revealed last week on Truth Social that he had received a target letter from the special counsel’s office related to the 2020 Election.

Since then, it’s been reported that the letter includes at least three charges: deprivation of rights, conspiracy to commit an offense or defraud the United States, and witness tampering, and that Trump is also likely to be charged with obstructing an official proceeding—the certification of the 2020 election by Congress on January 6, 2021.

On Monday it was reported that the special counsel’s office is now in possession of thousands of documents from the legal team of former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, who attempted to find voter fraud in the 2020 election victory of President Biden over former President Trump.

Tim Parlatore, the attorney for former New York City Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, a Trump and Giuliani associate, told CNN he had handed over documents to prosecutors over the weekend.

“I have shared all of these documents, approximately 600MB, mostly pdfs, with the Special Counsel and look forward to sitting down with them in about 2 weeks to discuss,” Parlatore said.

The last time the grand jury in the 2020 election probe met was exactly a week ago, during which time they declined to hand up any indictments.

CNN has reached out to the Department of Justice for comment but has so far not heard back. It’s DOJ policy not to comment on ongoing investigations.
