Senator Feinstein briefly hospitalized after suffering a fall

August 9, 2023

Should there be a mandatory retirement age for Congressional lawmakers?

A spokesperson for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said she was briefly hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a fall in her home.

Spokesperson Adam Russell told the San Francisco Chronicle that the Senator has since returned home.

At 90, Feinstein is the oldest member of Congress. She was hospitalized for more than two months earlier this year with shingles prompting some House Democrats—though not her colleagues in the Senate—to call for her to retire.

Feinstein has plans to retire at the end of her term in 2024, and already several Democratic Reps. have announced their candidacies to fill her California seat: Barbara Lee, Katie Porter and Adam Schiff.

Should Feinstein choose to retire before the end of her current term, Rep. Lee is a likely replacement. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetted Lee when he chose then-state Secretary of State Alex Padilla to replace then-Sen. Kamala Harris as she departed for the Vice Presidency, and he has publicly committed to choosing a Black woman should he get the chance to make another appointment.

According to Russell, Feinstein was in the hospital for “an hour or two” Wednesday before scans proved her clear to be discharged.

Congress is currently not in session as it’s on August break.
