Feds Search, Finds No Classified Documents at Pence’s DC Office

February 17, 2023

Federal investigators searched former Vice President Pence’s Washington DC office Friday but found no documents marked classified there, according to a Pence spokesman.

“The Department of Justice today completed a thorough and unrestricted search of Advancing American Freedom’s office for several hours and found no new documents with classified markings. One binder with approximately three previously redacted documents was taken,” Pence adviser Devin O’Malley said in a statement.

The search was conducted consensually with Pence’s counsel present.

A February 10 search of Pence’s home in Carmel, Indiana by FBI agents had uncovered one additional document marked classified, roughly two and a half weeks after a lawyer for Pence discovered about a dozen documents marked classified at his home.

That revelation came in the wake of discoveries of classified materials at President Biden’s  private office and residence. Biden voluntarily agreed to an FBI search of his home in Wilmington, Delaware, which uncovered six items in addition to the materials previously found at the residence and his private office. A search earlier this month of Biden’s vacation house in Rehoboth Beach turned up no additional documents marked classified.

On Thursday it was revealed that the FBI had conducted two searches of the library at Biden’s alma mater, the University of Delaware, home to more than 1,850 boxes of documents from his time as Senator, but retrieved material there did not appear to have classified markings, either.

It was further revealed on February 10 that former President Trump’s legal team had recently turned over to the DOJ an additional folder with classified markings that they said they found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

There have so far been no public reports of the FBI searching former President Trump’s additional properties—including Manhattan and Bedminster, New Jersey—beyond Mar-a-Lago after an August FBI search of his Florida country club residence uncovered hundreds of documents marked classified.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed special counsels—Jack Smith and Robert Hur—to investigate the Trump and Biden classified documents cases, respectively.
